For those of us with perfect or near perfect sight. It’s all too easy to forget the enormous reliance we place on our eyes. To lose the power of sight would change your world, forever.
Now consider your world changing purely due to circumstance – this is the fate of millions of people around the world. In developing countries near and far from our lucky shores, 80% of blindness is attributed to eye diseases such as cataracts, trachoma and diabetic retinopathy which is preventable or treatable.
The Fred Hollows Foundation works across 25 countries and has restored the sight to more than two and a half million people with avoidable blindness. The foundation continues the work of the illustrious Fred Hollows, a humanitarian and eye surgeon who helped restore the sight of thousands of people, regardless of their background. “For everyone, no matter whether they're rich or poor, to have the right to high quality and affordable eye care” – Fred Hollows.
The Fred Hollows Foundation works across the entire health network of these countries, training doctors and health workers, helping to build and upgrade facilities, educate on new technology and provide much needed equipment. Education and awareness is cornerstone to the foundation. A key part of their work is to foster change with governments to improve systems and update policies.
Together, we can help The Fred Hollows Foundation provide long term sustainable eye health care and end avoidable blindness.
The donation made by Seekers on behalf of our clients directly provides the power of sight back to 40 people suffering with avoidable blindness.
